Saturday Schmaturday

A while back Dieselboi over at WalkingPortland started a Meme asking his friends to recall their “Top 5 Concerts” from their High School years.
I’m not sure if it was because I was a dork, had strict parents, or just didn’t give a f***, but I only attended 2 shows during those not-so-glory days.
1. Naked Eyes @ Skoochies, Seattle 1984ish - They had only two hits and are a definite “Where are they now?” band. Memorable for the fact that the next day I had a quite painful Septoplasty
2. Duran Duran @ Seattle Center Arena, 2/2/84 - At the height of their popularity, when evry schoolgirl wanted a piece of the assorted Taylors, Rhodes and LeBons. My best friend even took so far as to actually model his look after Nick Rhodes. Here’s the proof. Got him tons-0-chicks. We went with two girls who insisted on throwing the teddy bears they brought up on stage for Simon LeBon. I must inform you that this was a large arena show. I don’t remember how but we all ended up against the barriers and security right in front of the stage. It was quite snug during the opening act but as soon Duran Duran took the stage we had the full force of thousand of screaming girls pushing us into the wooden security rail. It’s worth noting that this was the first band to extensively use video projections during their shows.
5 bands that I wish I would have seen “back in the day”
1. The Smiths
2. The Cure
3. Talking Heads
4. Joy Division
5. U2 (Boy 1980)
Junior is one cheap bastard - Don’t let kids get away with giving crappy xmas gifts
The Daily Show’s Holiday Season in God
Where my NY Homies at? - Interesting demographic map
Go ahead bite the Big Apple - 124 reasons to love New York
Spy vs. Spy - An easy way to see if the feds are snoopin’ in your email.
Why did you think of that? - Doane Paper, the graph paper/legal pad mash-up
oh, i totally would have thrown bears at duran duran. among other things as well.
my closest duran duran experience was seeing john taylor (my favorite!) play in another band in portland. and ohmygod, the band sucked, and in reality, everybody was just there to see john anyhow.
you were a lucky young man.
Oh you lucky shit to see Duran Duran at their heyday. Indeed, her name was Rio and she danced upon the sand. and somethin’ somethin’ cross the Rio Grande.
Ok i’ll show my age.
I threw a fit on two seperate occasions because my parents wouldn’t let me stay up late and watch, and here’s the kicker, the “world television premiers” of…
1. Logan’s Run
2. The Hindenburg
What year(s) was it?
mg…i saw Bruce Springsteen…Neil Young and wait, wait….don’t laugh…John Denver!!!! I had cousins (BOYZ MY AGE!!!!) who were allowed to go see Zeppelin, Kiss, etc. What a travesty! I too had strict parents.
ok, now let me preface this with the statement that i grew up on the quebec border and that montrobec was THE city and my musical influence over the early years…mikey has told me i must keep this to only five so here they go…please note these are in no particular order except maybe by date, not by greatness:
